The six videotapes
include:
- You as a
Helper: Explores our personal goals and
motivations as helpers. Presents a model of helping as a
natural process. Experienced helpers share their rewards
and great moments in helping. Discusses the challenge of
caring: how to be emotionally involved as a helper
without burning out and falling into the "helper's
pit."
- Grief and
Loss: Examines the impact and dynamics of grief
and loss. Interviews with bereaved family members
illustrate the different stages of grief and the tasks of
grieving. Presents examples of specific intervention
techniques and goals with grieving individuals and
families.
- Communication Skills for
Effective Helping: Presents a microskill approach to
communication skills and skill development. Identifies
and demonstrates verbal and nonverbal communication
skills, including silence, self-disclosure, reflecting
feelings, paraphrasing, and client frame-of-reference
responses. Discusses directiveness and control in
helping.
- Guidelines for Listening and
Helping: Presents guidelines for listening and
helping, enhancing self-esteem while promoting
self-disclosure, suspending judgments, developing a
diverse repertoire of helping skills, and helping people
tell their stories. Discusses major myths and mistakes in
helping others in distress, including the trivialization
of distress.
- Making Support Groups
Work: Examines how support groups help
caregivers, and specific strategies for ensuring
successful groups. Emphasizes open-ended approach to
support group facilitation. Presents ground rules for
members, typical problems in groups, and evaluation
techniques. Discusses and demonstrates support group
exercises in a caregiver group.
- The Helper's
Journey: Examines stress, coping, and personal and
professional growth for the caregiver. Presents a
practical model of stress and coping that uses the
caregiver's goals and values. Identifies invisible
stressors, causes of burnout, and proven stress
management strategies. Bereaved individuals talk about
